What are the four methods of teaching? Why do we use them?

The four methods of teaching are four different ways of presenting information to our students. These four methods are used to develop a variety of different skills as well as reach a multitude of learners.

The first method of teaching is behavioral. The behavioral method is a form of direct instruction, or teacher centeredIn the behavioral method, students are given chunks of information by the teacher to which the teacher then guides the students through that information. The point of behavioral knowledge is to transmit the knowledge from the teacher to the student. By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to repeat the information back to the teacher. Some implementations of the behavioral method would include; presentations, practice, lecture, homework, divergent questions (open-ended questions)etc.

The next three methods all use indirect instruction. Indirect instruction is student centered.

The second method of teacher is information processing. Information processing focuses on developing the students processing skills. Here, teachers encourage students to talk and find the answers to convergent questions, or factual questions. In addition to convergent questions, methods such as; compare and contrasting, analytical skills and critical thinking skills are not only used but built on. In order to accomplish this, students use resources such as graphic organizers, inquiry, research papers, reason, problem solving, etc.

Method three is social-interactive. Social interactive revolves around the students working together in groups. Here they interact with other classmates in order to find the correct answer. The social interactive method develops the students social skills and teaches them cooperative learning.  As educators, we can implement this method through the use of; peer review, group processing, think pair share, jigsaw, etc.

Our last method to discuss is the personal method. The personal method is used to develop an individual student's self identity/esteem. This method is based on the theory of humanism. The personal method lets students exhibit their own unique talents through the assignments they are given. Assignments that can be used for the personal method include; projects and individual assignments.
